Trek Ride+ Electronic Assist Bikes

We just sold our first Ride+ bike this past week, and I can tell you (from personal experience now) that they work awesome! They have an easy-to use computer that allows you to easily set the amount of electronic assist - which makes a huge difference. I was riding it around the shop here and rode up our steep ramp. I was barely pedaling and the bike flew on up without any effort. The battery immediately goes into regenerative mode when the brakes are applied, and it can be manually switched to that mode during long descents and coasting. Trek makes four models (in men's and women's) with the ride+ technology: the 7200+, FX+, Valencia+, and the Transport+. Sweet bikes.

Cyclocross and Tubeless

Racing cyclocross this season? Here's one of the best tips I think we can give you: set your bike up tubeless. Too many people pay gobs of money for a light-weight high-end wheelset hoping it will give them the competitive edge. Don't get me wrong, I agree with that 100 percent. The issue is when they then throw in heavy slime-filled tubes to prevent flats. Half the time you'll end up with a flat anyway, and you've now added at least four ounces per wheel...that's a half a pound of rotational weight! I've been in so many races where I watch rider after rider pull out to switch a wheel or fix a flat. 9 times out of 10 that ruins the race for you. But not me...I haven't had a flat in a cyclocross race since switching, and I'm running about five years on my mountain bike without a flat. Without a doubt, when done right, tubeless works!

Most of the wheels you'd use in a cyclocross race will have to be converted to work right. The Stan's No Tubes conversion kit is affordable and works great. Last year I road the Bontrager RXL wheels with a Stan's kit and the Hutchinson Bulldog tubeless tires. I never had any leaking issues or flats. Some wheels come ready to go. Mavic and Shimano have good tubeless options that only require a tubeless tire and a specific stem. So if you haven't jumped on the tubeless bandwagon yet, at least look into it. Talk to someone who uses it or call us up at the shoppe and talk to us about it. Oh, and one more thing: have a great cyclocross season!

OCLV HexSL

Trek is one of the last bike manufacturers to still manufacture bikes in the USA. So what's the big deal? What does it matter if your bike is made in the US or in China? Quality! Now the proof: Trek's new 6-Series SSL is made up of the latest carbon fiber milestone: OCLV HexSL. The US government has designated raw HexSL fiber as a defense grade material, making it illegal to ship outside the NATO alliance. As the largest domestic manufacturer of bicycles, Trek is well equipped to manufacturer its new SSL in the States, and has already declared the new Madone 6 Series SSL platform will be built exclusively at Trek’s Waterloo, Wisconsin production facility. “OCLV HexSL is really a game-changing material. Before this material’s culmination we had to use two, sometimes three different layers of carbon to get the same strength and performance that we get from just one layer of OCLV HexSL.” (Chris Pomering - Trek Road Product Engineer) OCLV HexSL exhibits the same stiffness as High Modulus carbon fiber, but provides over four times the strength and twice the elongation properties. This allowed Trek to drop more than 100 grams from the previous 6-Series frame without compromising ride characteristics. All I can say is I want one.

Speed Concept Unveiled

After more than three years in the making, the Speed Concept line of triathlon bikes is here! Trek unveiled the complete lineup of the Speed Concept on stage seven of the Tour of California. They're making it available in three series: the 2 (aluminum), 7 (TCT carbon), and 9 (OCLV carbon with Project One). We have a couple of each on order...they should be here in a month or so. I'm pretty excited to get my hands on this bike and build one up. It's the most aerodynamic, it has the most integration technologies, and it's the most adjustable of any TT/tri bike on the market. Let's make a goal to rough the rainy weather and ride the bike to work a few times this week. If work is too far, ride to the grocery store or something...replace a short car ride with a bike ride. You'll be impressed with how good it feels to get out, pedal, and feel the wind in your hair. To get into biking you don't have to spend a bunch. Nice commuter models start out just under $400. You could save that much in gas in the first year or two. Go by bike!

Shimano Dyna-Sys

If you haven't taken a look at the new Shimano Dyna-sys XT and SLX systems, it's about time you did. I've been doing a little homework lately, and I'm pretty impressed with the new changes - I'll for sure have it on my bike next year. I've always ridden XT components for their affordability, durability, and performance. I don't think you can beat it for the price, plus, if I smash a large ring on a ride I don't have to take out a second mortgage on my house to replace it. For whatever reason, Shimano chose only to run XT and SLX with the new Dyna-Sys (I think they'll be unveiling a new electronic XTR soon...just a guess). Anyway, the changes look like they'll really improve mountain bike shifting. First, they chose to keep a triple crank upfront...good for those of us who like to climb steep, technical rides like Beus, Malan's, or the Indian trail. The rings are now closer together for a faster, more seamless shift. They also lessened the gap between each ring by making the small cog two teeth larger (24t) and the large ring two teeth smaller (42t). The middle cassette rings have a smaller incremental change between each cog than previously for smoother shifting and less dramatic shifts, and comes in an 11-36 option. The goal is to make it possible to ride on larger rings more frequently to lower overall chain tension and decrease impact on rear suspension systems. You should get an overall longer lasting, better shifting drivetrain that improves full-suspension designs. The chain is the first 10s designed specifically for mountain riding. It sheds mud better and is more durable. Another cool feature is that it's directional. Right side outer plates are designed different from left inner plates for fast, smooth shifting front and rear. All-in-all, I'm excited to get out on the new Dyna-Sys to give it a whirl. We'll be getting product in soon...call us with questions.

Quality Bicycle Products is a huge distributor of bikes, components, accessories, tools, and just about anything else that has to do with cycling. They've always operated out of Minnesota, but just recently they opened up a warehouse here in Utah. We're excited because it'll allow us to have a JIT inventory of sorts. We can only stock so much, and it's alway a hassle for the customer to have us order something for them because they have to wait at least a week (or pay extra for overnight shipping). With their warehouse so close, we can order anything from the thousands of items they stock and get it here within a day. We've attached their catalog to our website so you can check out just about anything that has to do with cycling without jumping from site to site. We hope this turns out to be helpful to you.

Troy just became the proud owner of one of the sweetest bikes I've ever seen...a custom Project One 6.9 Madone. He definitely didn't cut any corners. The frame is Trek's U.S. made Red Dot carbon (made up of OCLV 55 - best stuff out there). Everything is so perfectly integrated and flawless. He chose the team crit paint job...one of the Signature Series options on the Project One website. His color choices look really sweet and unique, definitely not a cookie-cutter design. He's rolling Aeolus 5.0 carbon clincher wheels. They're light, fast, and look awesome with the sticker kit that matches the frame color. He decided to go with Shimano's Di2 groupset that we've been blogging about so much. The electronic wires run internally - another neat integration feature. That's going to be one lusted after bike. I can't wait until it gets in here to build it up. I put it on Face Book, so let him know what you all think.

Spring Rides!

This morning Matt, Jayk, Manny, and I got up early to ride the North Ogden Divide. It was my first time riding it this year, and I didn't miss it. We had an unusual strong tailwind heading up and if it wasn't for that I would'nt have even made it to the top. I got dropped...hard. Jayk, Matt, and Manny road pretty strong - they've all apparently been secret training already this spring. Despite bonking, it was a great strength building ride. We flew out to North Ogden with the huge tailwind, but comming back into the wind hurt.
We'll be starting these morning rides each Tuesday and Saturday. Everyone is invited, and I'll ride with you if you feel like you're slow...I need some company climbing anyway. We usually meet about 6:30, but that will change with different rides that we do. For road rides we'll meet at the shoppe, but for mountain rides we'll meet at the trailhead. I'll keep our Facebook page updated with information about the rides, or just give us a call (476-1600) or shoot us an email (nate@thebikeshoppe.com) to get the week's schedule. Di2 Debut

I made a post a few months ago about the new Dura Ace electronic group I put on my Madone. Since then, I've only had a chance to ride it indoors on the rollers where I wasn't really able to fully appreciate the benefits. It replaced the Sram Red group that I had on my bike last year, and while it added a bit to the overall weight of my bike, I'm becoming more and more convinced that it's worth the extra weight. Last night completely sold me. Jayk, Jake, and I went out on our first real road ride for the year last night after work. The roads weren't too bad (none of us got a flat), and the weather was awesome! We left from the shop and did a couple of loops down 89 and back through South Weber then up the toll road. I enjoyed every second with the new group. The hoods are comfortable, with increased surface area on the upper portion of the hood...they fit my hands perfect. The brakes feel snappy, have a lot of power, and have a really stiff spring that adds to a really crisp lever return. Rear der shifting was excellent. You can't shift up two cogs at once like with 7900 DA, but you can tap that button pretty quick, and with a lot less effort than throwing the lever all the way over. The front der and crankset were incredible. Every time I shifted from the small chainring to the large up front, I was startled with the shift. It's an understatement to say that the shift was immediate. It was like Ferrari paddle shifting...the chain doesn't make a sound or have the slightest hesitation. You literally push a button, and despite the torque on the drivetrain, the chain is ramped to the large ring before you even realize you've shifted. All I noticed was a cadence change - no skipping, no hesitation, no noise, NO EFFORT! I give it an A+ on performance. I'm excited to put some miles on it this year...I have a feeling it will only get better as I get used to operating the system.

Project California Version 1

Cervelo is coming out with what looks like a completely incredible bike. The new Project California is completely hand-built in the USA by Cervelo engineers to avoid any type of tampering or tainting by third-party manufacturers. Pinarello Dogma

We just received the NEW Pinarello Dogma yesterday. This one is sold, and it's not cheap ($5,500 frame and fork). We're getting ready to build her up for some spring racing. With the Dogma 60.1, Pinarello offers a new technology to the cycling world: a completely asymmetric frame designed to counter-balance pedaling forces from the drive-side of the frame. It's a beautiful frame that can be completely personalized. It's light too, weighing in at only 950 grams on a 54cm.

Speed Concept Availability

A couple weeks ago I posted about Trek's new Speed Concept being ridden by Chris Leito and Lance Armstrong. I mentioned that I was hopeful it would be available in 2011. Great news to all you triathlon enthusiasts out there...those bikes will be rolling out as early as this July. Our Trek rep was in yesterday and told me that they're making three different models: aluminum, TCT carbon, and the sweet OCLV carbon (shown in the video). They don't have pricing yet, but I'll keep you posted. Come in and talk to us about them!

26 or 29er?

Thinking about switching to a 29er? Here, Gary Fisher explains some of the benefits vs. the 26" wheel and why they finally made the change to their bikes in 2002. Gary Fisher was the FIRST major bike manufacturer to jump into the 29er arena. That's one huge advantage of going with a Fisher when riding 29ers...most of your major bike companies didn't come out with 29ers in their lineup until 2008. Gary Fisher already has a ton of experience making these bikes, and they handle better than any other 29ers out there. Two Wheel Adventures

We'll be heading down to St. George on another Two Wheel Adventure on March 12-13. We'll be leaving Friday morning around 10:00. You won't have to worry or stress about a thing as you relax and watch movies the whole way down. We'll stay at the Las Palmas condos near Green Valley. Friday night we have a night ride planned on Bearclaw. Saturday morning we'll head out and ride the Zen trail and either the Jem or Gooseberry trails. We'll be arriving home Saturday night around 10:00. Transportation, food, lodging, nutritional supplements, lights, etc. will all be provided. So far we have about 11 guys total going. There's still room in the bus, so give us a call today...It'll be one of the funnest trips you ever take on a bike.

Top Fuel 9.9

In the 2009 Leadvill 100, Lance convincingly won even though he rode on a flat 15 miles from the finish. The Top Fuel 9.9 SSL is one of the lightest, fastest, most efficient cross-country full-suspension bikes on the market. It's also packed with technology adapted from the Fuel EX and Madone road bikes. From the EX line we get the Active Braking Pivot (ABP) which provides a fully active suspension system even under heavy braking...no brake jack with this setup. From the Madone they steal the BB90 technology and the seat mast. It comes stock with the new SRAM XX component group...the first 10 speed mountain bike group set. The bike rides like a dream and looks awesome. It's also hand built in the USA. I just finished replacing the Sram Red gruppo with the new electronic shifting Dura Ace Di2. The component group really makes the bike look great. It was really quite easy getting everything set up. The derailler adjustments are a piece of cake. The rear derailleur can be very fine tuned with up to 25 micro-adjustments per cog. To make a gear adjustment you simply hold down a small button that changes the derailleur and shifter to adjustment mode. After that you tap the high and low buttons on the shifter to move the derailleur left or right to center it under the cog. Shifting is incredibly fast and effortless...especially with the front derailleur. Shimano includes cable guides that do a great job hiding the cables and protecting them. Like I said, the bike looks great, and the cable running the length of the underside of the downtube doesn't draw any attention to itself. The only negative aspect is that the change added a little bit of weight to the bike, but I think the benefits will definitely make it worth a few additional ounces. I can't wait to ride it this next season. We'll be taking the bike down with us on our TBS St. George trip where we'll use it as one of our demos.

Indoor Century 1/23/2010

For this week's Indoor Century we were joined by the women's ICE (Idaho Cycling Enthusiasts)cycling team: Keri Gibson, Diane Evans, Jenny Romney, Danielle Trejo, and Heather Smith. Two others couldn't make it because of the snow storm that hit this morning. Some great customers, Jeff and Nancy Lindsay, and a local racer, Darrin Goff, are also riding with us this morning. It's going great! The class is packed...Matt is riding the rollers. They're about 60 miles into it right now and will probably be finishing up around 11:00 or so. We'll be holding our next Indoor Century in another two weeks. Call us for details.

Trek Speed Concept

Look out triathlon world...here comes Trek. Just like they did with road bikes in 2008 when they introduced the new Madone to the cycling world, Trek is looking to revolutionize the sport of triathlons with their new Speed Concept. Have you ever seen a bike so neatly integrated? The brakes are built into the frame; ALL of the cables are internal with the only exception being a small section touching the rear derailler; and the left rear chainstay is equipped with the new Speed Trap, eliminating the need for additional sensors and zip-ties. I think this bike is enough to get anybody into triathlons. This is still just a prototype, but maybe we'll see it in 2011...I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

NEW Tour Bus!

Matt just got back from a trip to Las Vegas to pick up our NEW tour bus we'll be using for our TBS Trips. They stopped in St. George on the way and held a mountain and road bike demo. Besides the rain on Monday, they had a lot of fun and got in some good riding. Our next St. George trip will be on Friday and Saturday (Feb 19-20). We plan on getting a big group of people for this trip. The ride down will be a breeze with a ton of leg room, reclining seats, and a big selection of some of our favorite movies. Another Awesome Indoor Century

This morning was awesome! We had a good group show up, and everyone who attempted it finished. We started out watching Breakaway...a 1979 classic (Brett Wehrli's choice), then Mission Impossible 3, and finally Napolean Dynamite. We treated everyone to a breakfast of bananas and strawaberries with cream, bagels, Toaster Strudels (a big hit), and a bunch of nutritional supplements (FRS). Congrats to John Cebollero, Dianne Hale, Justin Koyle, Coury Lloyd, Matt Longson, and Brett Wehrli for finishing. We appreciate you guys supporting us. Next week's century is full already, but we'll be having more in a couple weeks...check our website to keep up on the dates.

2010 Trek 6-Series Madone

Last year I purchased a 2009 6.9 Madone. I've owned a lot of bikes over the years...both road and mountain, and I have to say that I've never been as impressed with a new purchase as I was with this new Madone. It's crazy how well the bike handles in any situation. Whether I'm on a long ride, racing in a crit, or sprinting up a hill, the bike responds perfectly in every scenario. I decided to get it with a Project One criterium paint job. It cost a little more, but no one else out there has a bike quite like mine. The finish work is incredible...every little detail is flawless. The only thing I've been disappointed with is seeing the new 2010 models come out with their new upgrades. I've never seen such a well thought out bike. The finished product is so clean and smooth looking with the new internal cable routing, the integrated BB cable guide, and the speed and cadence trap sensors on the chain stay. Try to find a bike that compares. I was reading some posts on youtube.com about the changes, and some people were less than impressed, saying that those things don't matter. They do if you want perfection, and the last time I checked, anyone looking to spend that much on a bike expects nothing less. In my opinion, if you weigh this bike against any other in its class, the Trek will always come out on top. I'm not saying that other bike companies don't make great bikes...many do; they're just not the best.

TBS Indoor Centuries

This morning some die-hards started off the new year doing our first indoor century of 2010. Manny Cyers, Nate Baldwin, Caprice (I won't even attempt the last name), Joel Rackam, Mark Christiensen, and Ben Towery, and our very own Matt Howard all woke up early and had put anywhere from 75 to 100 miles on their bikes before10:00am. Their entertainment was the Seinfeld series...a new addition to our spin lab. Seinfeld was a hit, and everyone had a blast getting in some great base-building before the season starts. These guys will be kicking butt in their races this spring. Matt created a course simulation that mirrored a ride starting at the shop, heading up to Mt green and over Trappers Loop, around the dam and over the North Ogden divide, then up to Brigham City. From Brigham the course headed back to Bountiful and up to the Bountiful Temple, then down to Kaysville, ending somewhere near Bikers' Edge. Way to go!...Next time I'll jump in if there's a spare bike. Our next century will be Saturday, January 23...DON'T MISS IT!!

Merry Christmas!

Looks like this year is going to be a great Christmas. We have plenty of snow, the spin classes are full and everyone enrolled is making big improvements, BYU and Utah won their bowl games, and we had a great pre-Christmas rush at the shoppe. Despite the downed economy we had a solid year, and we're really optimistic for the coming season. We have some awesome plans for spring and summer riding both mountain and road. We really appreciate all of our customers. You're awesome...you're the ones that make it possible for us do what we love doing...fixing, selling, and riding bikes. Burn the Turkey Ride

Thanks to everyone who showed up at our annual Burn the Turkey ride this morning. We met at Rainbow Gardens at 9:00 and headed north on the east bench. I'm pretty sure that everyone who came had a lot of fun. Nobody got hurt, and no bikes were broken (dang). The weather turned out to be perfect...it wasn't too cold. The trail is in great condition right now...there isn't any snow, ice, or mud. Here are some of the photos from the ride.

Turkey Triathlon

Congrats to Weston Woodward for winning the 2009 WSU Turkey tri. Patrick Mickelson and Chaz Elmer came in second and third. Good job guys! Sorry, no photos of the women, but congrats to Alex Hurd (1st), Toby Nishikana, and Julie Hansen for podium finishing. I was glad to see Tammi Mobley coming in 7th...hope those new shoes helped!

Superfly 100

If you haven't heard of or seen it yet, it's time we introduce you to the FASTEST new bike on the market: the Superfly 100. This is the bike that nearly caused a riot at Trek World 2009. This bike is everything that the X-country enthusiast could hope for: light, stiff, FAST. I've been telling everyone that I have the hardest time keeping up with Matt since he got his Superfly hardtail; well, I probably won't even be able to ride with him when he's riding this next year...unless I get one first. Spooky Night Ride

Thanks to everyone who participated in our first annual Spooky Night Ride. To any of you who didn't come, we sure hope to see you next year. I'm not sure if you can tell by the picture, but we all met at 29th street and then rode up to the pond just under Taylor's canyon on the east bench where we branched off and went on longer rides. Afterward, we met at the pond to sit by the campfire (thanks to Angie and Victor for letting us borrow their lighter) where we made some smoores and loaded up on energy drinks. Special thanks to everyone who helped us out, and to Sean Mathewson for the cool picture.

Ben Lomond Snow Ride

This week we decided to try our luck climbing to BL peak from the divide. It doesn't look like there's very much snow up there from down in the valley, but there is. We rode/hiked our bikes in and out about six miles through about a foot of snow. It was slow going but really fun, and on the way back down we had some pretty sweet wipe-outs. It was also really REALLY COLD! We did get to see some mountain goats up near the saddle - Jakes first time seeing one that wasn't stuffed.

Lotoja Classic 2009

We decided to race the competitive five-man relay this year. I've gotta say that the relay is definitely the way to go. The last time I did the whole thing solo almost made me quit cycling altogether. But hashing it out for two hours and then crashing and cheering on the rest of the team is really a fun way to go about it. Plus, you'll have plenty of energy for a fun night in Jackson. Jayk started us off from Logan to Preston; Cody killed Strawberry; I (Foulger) took Salt River Pass; Matt TT'd from Afton to Alpine; and Messerly brought us home to Teton village. We came in 3rd which we thought was awesome.

Skyline Trail

It's been a while since we last posted. We've been all over the place riding, but most recently we went up to Ben Lomond Peak from the North Ogden divide. That is one of the coolest rides I've ever been on. Last week we got up really early and headed up to the peak. We got rained on pretty hard and it was freezing cold, but it was awesome. The clouds were hugging the mountain, and at times visibility was only about 15 feet or so. We all really enjoyed it despite the frostbite. This past Thursday we decided to go at it again. The weather was a lot better. Here are some sweet pictures of the rides.

Cash Crit

All the guys did the cash crit yesterday for Matt's 37th birthday. It was a great turnout. Unfortunately, Matt wasn't able to ride with us because he was talking to the Cytomax guys when the race started. He took off after us and eventually caught the group, but by that time was so wasted that he had to drop off. Sucks for him...he was really excited, and he's in better shape than the rest of us here at the shop. I had a blast. It was the first crit I've been able to ride this year...work makes it tough to get out there on time sometimes. We'll for sure be there next Thursday though.

This past Tuesday we rode up the divide. We're going again this Tuesday morning. Anyone can join us...we'll be leaving from the shop at 6:30 am.

Snow Basin

This morning Matt, Jake, and I took a new customer (Dominic) up to the Ogden overlook. We met at Wheelers trailhead just outside of the Ogden canyon at 6:00 am. Not many people showed up to this one, I'm guessing because of the time. It was a sweet ride, though. We branched off of Wheelers and climbed ice-box to maples. At the top of maples there's a service road that leads to another trail heading up to the overlook. It was a perfect morning and an awesome view.

Malan's Peak

This morning Matt, Jayk, and I rode up to Malan's Peak. I forgot how tough that ride is...that's got to be one of the steepest trails around. We all made it in pretty good time. Matt wants to do the ride every thursday morning for strenght training...good luck. Here are a couple pic's of Jayk, Matt, and the dog.

Lewis Peak

Last Saturday for our group morning ride we decided to get up early and head up to Lewis Peak from Windsurfer Beach. For those of you who haven't ridden that trail yet, I'd definitely recommend it. It's a 10 mile climb to the peak and worth every mile. There are plenty of places to stop and overlook both valleys. The view is incredible. The whole trip can be done in a little over two hours...if you don't get any flats like Messerly, or if your dog doesn't bonk.

This is Fern, the Bike Shoppe mascot. She did great until about mile 15 where she got dropped, disoriented, and started heading back up toward the peak. Luckily Messerly had a flat and came down behind her and was able to point her in the right direction again.

This is how it works: After you've submitted your race results form, we'll take the names of the customers who accurately choose the winners of each stage and place thier names in a raffle to win some cool stuff.
